That's not the answer either, necessarily. It's something quite different.
In fact you said it yourself:

This would not let us get at the real video buffer and the real keyboard.
What most people want when they ask for XYZ terminal emulation is to be able
to type every bizarre key combination allowed by the XYZ terminal and, if
the real keyboard is different, to have a complete mapping, including Alt
keys, F keys, Command keys, Ctrl-Alt combinations, etc etc. But if C-Kermit
can't see the keyboard, there is no way to do this.
